AGM celebrates another very successful year

At the Regis School of Music, members of the Bognor Regis Town Twinning Association gathered for their AGM and to listen to the Association’s achievements over the past year.

Mrs Heather Perrott, Chairman, led the AGM and praised the success of the Town Twinning Association in 2025. The social programme had been much enjoyed comprising rambles, a boules tournament, a quiz evening, luncheons, games evenings, talks, coffee mornings, and the ever popular Beaujolais Bistro, which sold out all 52 places quickly. A second Murder Mystery Evening was as successful as the first when members dressed up as the 14 suspects, whilst the rest of the guests tried to figure out who was the dastardly Murderer.

At the Morning of Christmas Cheer, Father Christmas arrived with two rather adult-sized elves and quizzed guests as to the names of all his reindeer. Members were amused by his stories whilst partaking of the mulled wine, spiced apple punch and generous buffet available

In May, visitors from our French twin town of St-Maur-des-Fossés, located near Paris, came to Bognor for several days, staying with members of the Twinning Association. A guided walking tour of Bognor, finishing in the Bognor museum, was arranged as well as visits to Petworth House, West Dean and Chichester.

In June members of the Association visited Weil am Rhein, in the vineyard region of Southern Germany, and were treated to several days of visits to Switzerland and France, as well as the Black Forest. Members stayed with friends, old and new, and enjoyed evening receptions laid on by the Town Hall and also by the Weil am Rhein Association.

Mrs Perrott was unanimously approved by the AGM as the new Chairman for 2026. Mr Patrick Hastings was welcomed as the new President of the Association. Mr Hastings has been a long-term active member, who was Chairman back in 1987 when Bognor initially twinned with Weil am Rhein.

And the winners are....

Boules Is played by 17 million people worldwide – as well as in Hotham Park, Bognor Regis, where the finals of a local boules competition were held.

Family and friends turned out to support the competing teams, all hoping to win the coveted glass trophy. The annual competition is organised by the Bognor Regis Town Twinning Association and the tournament runs from March to August each year.

The winners of the semi-finals were the Rusty Exocets (David Roche, Chris Wood and Lizzie Johnston) and the Amiaboules (Mike Turner, Andrew Lubianski and Sue Gallagher). These two teams then played each other in the final, eagerly watched by an attentive crowd. The deserving 2025 winners were the Amiaboules team, who were warmly congratulated and presented with the trophy.

Boules or pétanque (pronounced pet-onk) is now played in over 160 countries. Surprisingly Thailand is the country renowned for its strong Petanque teams and has now won numerous world championships. Hopefully, these championships are not the feats of endurance that happened in France as the world record for the longest game ever was recorded there at 100 hours! Fortunately, the four rounds of the Bognor Regis finals took under four hours to complete this year.

Bognor Regis is fortunate to have its own boules piste in Hotham Park, located near the Adventure Golf. Many groups play there regularly, including those from U3A and from Twinning groups. The piste is open to the public with boules available at the nearby kiosk.

Do watch out for squirrels though, as they are attracted by the small round wooden ball, called a jack or cochonnet (literally meaning piglet), used as the target in the game, which they regard as a possible nut, if left in its natural wooden colour. They run off with the jack, dropping it when they find it an extra hard nut to crack but leaving definite toothmark indentations!

n a less amusing incident in Paris, France, some years ago, an 84 year-old pensioner was enjoying a quiet Sunday afternoon game of boules, when a two-tonne runaway circus elephant suddenly appeared! The elephant had broken out of a nearby circus, charged into the square and then hit the pensioner with his trunk, seriously injuring him. Fortunately, we know of no elephants in the Bognor Regis area.

Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here” is not just a film—it’s a hauntingly beautiful act of remembrance. Based on the memoir Ainda Estou Aqui by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, the story chronicles the life of Eunice Paiva, a mother of five whose husband, former congressman Rubens Paiva, was abducted and murdered by Brazil’s military dictatorship in 1971. What unfolds is a deeply personal yet politically resonant portrait of grief, resilience, and quiet defiance.

Fernanda Torres delivers a career-defining performance as Eunice, embodying a woman who refuses to be broken. Her portrayal is subtle yet seismic—every glance, every gesture carries the weight of a nation’s trauma and a mother’s unwavering love. The film’s emotional power is amplified by the presence of Torres’ real-life mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who plays Eunice in her later years, adding a generational echo to the story’s themes.

Salles’ direction is masterful. He juxtaposes the idyllic warmth of 1970s Rio de Janeiro with the creeping dread of authoritarian violence. Super 8 footage shot by the Paiva children adds a nostalgic texture, while scenes of military helicopters and silent agents lurking in doorways remind us of the ever-present threat. The cinematography by Adrian Teijido and editing by Affonso Gonçalves create a rhythm that feels both intimate and epic.

What makes I’m Still Here so powerful is its refusal to sensationalize. Instead of dramatizing torture or violence, it focuses on the psychological toll of disappearance—the limbo of not knowing, the bureaucratic cruelty of delayed justice, and the emotional labour of keeping a family whole. Eunice’s resistance is not loud; it’s found in ice cream parlour outings, in smiles for family photos, in the insistence that joy is a form of protest.

The title itself is a declaration. “I’m Still Here” speaks to Eunice’s enduring presence, to Rubens’ legacy, and to the memory of all those lost to political violence. It’s also a warning: authoritarianism may fade, but its shadows linger. In a time when far-right movements are re-surging globally, this film feels tragically timely.

Verdict: I’m Still Here is a breathtakingly tragic, emotionally rich, and politically urgent masterpiece. It’s a love letter to maternal strength, a reckoning with Brazil’s past, and a reminder that memory itself can be an act of resistance. One of the best Twinning International Films to date. Unmissable

Weil am Rhein visit

A most enjoyable visit enjoyed by all

During another successful three town twinning exchange to Weil am Rhein, Germany, Diana Stöcker, the Mayor of Weil am Rhein received gifts from Ronny Haase (Mayor of Trebbin) and Heather Perrott (Honorary Vice President of the Bognor Regis Twinning Association), who was representing the Mayor of Bognor Regis, at an evening Council reception for all the visitors in the Town Hall.

Weil am Rhein, the hosts for this year’s 6 day visit, organised an amazing programme for over 40 visitors from the Twin Towns including a day out in France, visiting the medieval village of Kayserberg (once voted France’s favourite village) before being treating guests to a superb 5 course lunch in a mountain top restaurant in the Vosges mountains. On another day guests were given a guided tour of the old city of Freiburg, on the edge of the Black Forest, and known today as one of the most sustainable cities on the planet. A cable car ride from the city up the adjacent Schauinsland mountain, was undertaken by many.

Other days were taken up with various visits organised by individual hosts such as a trip to Basle in Switzerland, just a bus ride away, or a nature walk along the wine route, canoeing on the Rhine, Vitra museum visit, Black Forest waterfall and Black Forest Line a 450m suspension footbridge, bicycle rides, canoeing 18.2km up the Rhine etc

As well as the Civic Reception with buffet at the Weil am Rhein Town Hall, on the very last evening a sit down dinner, with musical entertainment, was given for all Twinning members and their hosts. Bognor members stayed either with individual hosts they already knew or those, taking part for the first time, were welcomed by new friends. Such an enjoyable and action-packed visit was over too soon. Next year the visit will be hosted by Trebbin, located to the south of Berlin.

French Twin Town visitors learn about Bognor’s history

Twelve visitors representing Bognor’s twin town, St Maur des Fossés (near Paris), had a hugely successful 4 day stay in Bognor Regis in May and met our new Mayor, Councillor Mrs Gill Yeates. During their stay, instead of heading off to nearby towns, this time our visitors were led on a very informative guided walk around Bognor by Ken Blamires, chair of the Bognor Regis Heritage Trails Trust.

At the pier, they learnt much about its history, including its use during the war years, and also how at one time the pier was 1000 feet long (304 metres) with a pavilion at the end, before storms damaged its structure. A little further along The Esplanade, where the amusement arcade is now located, was once the site of Billy Butlin’s fairground which opened in 1932. One of Butlin’s original money-making enterprises before he developed his holiday camp ideas. Yet Butlin would probably have never dreamed of the Bognor Regis Time Portal, also on The Esplanade, which was fascinating for our visitors.

This was followed by a visit to the Bognor Regis museum in West Street where a lot of interest was shown in the old bathing machine displayed there. This hut on wheels would be pulled to the edge of the sea by a horse to preserve the modesty of the occupant as they could then descend directly into the waves. Apparently, when bathing machines went out of fashion, the huts were removed from the wheels and the tops used along the beach front, becoming the forerunners of the beach huts we have today.

Guests and their hosts also took the Saturday to visit places such as West Dean gardens or Petworth House before an evening reception was held in their honour at The Fox pub restaurant in Felpham. Bognor Regis Mayor, Councillor Mrs Gill Yeates, in her first week of office, gave a very welcoming speech to the French visitors at the Reception. The menu for the occasion included traditional British favourites such as fish and chips, sausage & mash or cottage pie and the possibilities of Eton Mess or Spotted Dick for dessert.

Before their departure on Eurostar, a boules match was organised, which pitted a French team against an all British team. It was a very close match but the British edged ahead and won the match by just a few points. Perhaps there will be a return match when members from Bognor visit St Maur des Fosses next year

All of the visitors from St Maur des Fossés were hosted in the homes of individual members of the Bognor Regis Town Twinning Association. Many were old friends having participated in these exchanges many times over the years. Bognor Regis and St Maur des Fossés were officially Twinned in 1980. The first exchanges were made with an Adult Education group in Bognor, although the initial interest in becoming a Twin Town was through the daughter of a Bognor businessman, who had married and just happened to be living in St Maur des Fossés!

More Very Successful Social Events

A very enjoyable and brain stimulating Quiz evening was held recently for two local Town Twinning Associations. Over 60 people, all members and friends of Bognor Regis and Angmering Associations, joined together to make up eleven teams for the annual Joint Quiz event.

Questions ranging in categories : Transport & Travel, British Landmarks, Sport in Film, Living World, Mixed Music and Think Link, were set by independent and very entertaining quizmasters, Ric and Sharon. Teams could play a Joker in an attempt to double their scores, if they were lucky, but only on one chosen round.

This year, Angmering Village Hall was a very welcome and warm venue for the occasion. Halfway through the evening, all present were treated to a rather sumptuous Ploughman’s supper, whilst still puzzling over the picture quiz. Prizes for the winning team and an excellent raffle rounded off the evening.

Some weeks later the Bognor Regis Association was treated to a talk, another in a series of exceptional talks by local historian, Dave Smith. This time the subject was ‘1066 and All That’. The illustrated talk was packed full of facts and delivered with much humour by Dave, who surprised many in the audience by mentioning things they were never taught at school!

Did you know that William the Conqueror banned the slave trade? In pre-conquest England up to 30% of the population were slaves but in 1072, after William became King, this all changed for the better. Unfortunately, William becoming King of England also laid the foundations for the 100 Years War that eventually erupted between England and France between 1337 and 1453.

AGM celebrates a highly successful year

On a rainswept night, but in the warmth of the Regis School of Music, members of the Bognor Regis Town Twinning Association gathered for their AGM and to listen to the Association’s achievements over the past year. And there were many achievements.

Mrs Heather Perrott, Chairman, led the AGM and praised the success of the Town Twinning Association in 2024. The social programme had been expanded to include new ideas as well as keeping old favourites. Members had enjoyed rambles, games evenings, talks, coffee mornings, a boules tournament, a quiz evening and the popular Beaujolais Bistro, which sold out all 50 places in 10 days. A new event had been a Murder Mystery Evening, with members dressing up as the 14 suspects, whilst the rest of the 30 guests tried to figure out ‘Who Dun It’.

Father Christmas once again made a stop at the final event of the social calendar, when he dropped in with presents, and a cheeky smile, to the Morning of Christmas Cheer. Members were not only cheered by his presence but probably also by the mulled wine, spiced apple punch and generous buffet available

In May, for the first time in some years, due to Covid and other difficulties, a visit was undertaken by 22 Bognor members to our French twin town of St-Maur-des-Fossés. St Maur is located only a short train ride from Paris and visitors were given ample opportunity to explore the city. Closer to St Maur, visits were organised to the Chateau de Vincennes and the Abbaye de Saint-Maur.

2024 also gave the opportunity to welcome visitors from our two German twin towns, Trebbin and Weil am Rhein, to Bognor Regis. A programme of visits included a trip to the replica Sistine Chapel in Goring, Amberley Chalk Pits museum, Arundel and Chichester Cathedral. Add to this a Council funded evening reception for the visitors and a further dinner reception, arranged by the Association. A Council grant also allowed the Association to continue funding its Youth Programme, whereby young people from each twin town can join the exchange visits.

For 2025, the AGM unanimously approved Mrs Perrott, the Life Honorary Vice President of the Association, as its next Chairman. Mrs Perrott, who is very familiar with the role of Chairman, first joined the Bognor Regis Town Twinning Association in the 1980s and went with her husband and three young daughters to Germany on an exchange visit. It was the start of many warm friendships, which still continue, as they do with all members who participate in the exchanges.

Taking Fundraising to new heights!

Your Vice Chairman Ray Hagger is preparing to take fundraising to new heights—literally—by undertaking a sponsored wingwalk to raise vital funds for a national cancer support charity.

The daredevil challenge will support Maggie’s a national charity that provides free, expert support to people living with cancer, as well as their families and friends. The charity operates 24 dedicated centers in NHS cancer hospitals across the UK, offering emotional, practical, and social support to those navigating the toughest of times.

“Like so many others, I’ve seen the devastating impact cancer can have, not only on patients but also on those around them,” said Ray Hagger. “The work this charity does is extraordinary—helping people cope, stay strong, and feel less alone. I wanted to do something big to help them continue their work, and wing walking certainly ticks that box!”

Beaujolais Bistro

Another sold out success....

Yet another huge success for the highly anticipated Beaujolais Bistro luncheon, hosted each year by the Bognor Town Twinning Association to celebrate the November arrival of the Beaujolais Nouveau. This year the event sold-out all 52 places in just a week after it was advertised to members. And no wonder as the Bistro included a three course luncheon with a French flavour, as well as a much-appreciated sampling of the new Beaujolais and unlimited wine! For £19 it was a real deal in these straitened times.

Guests appreciated the whole menu of classic French onion soup, with a main course of traditional Cassoulet, followed by Plum Clafoutis with a rich plum sauce and cream for dessert. Not forgetting the coffees and teas with mints and the Beaujolais Nouveau, of course.

Before the meal, Heather Perrott, Chairman of the BRTA, welcomed guests and went on to recount many of the other successful social events the Association had organised during the past year, as well as the exchange visits with both France and Germany. She also made mention of the history behind the main course dish of Cassoulet that guests were about to enjoy on the menu. One legend places the birth of the first Cassoulet dish in the year 1355. This was during the 100 years war, when the British were laying siege to the city of Castelnaudry in the South of France. In order to fortify their soldiers, the fearful citizens of Castelnaudry pooled what food they had, beans, pork, sausages, etc and simmered it all in a large cauldron. The invigorated soldiers, having eaten this hearty meal, then went out to overthrow the British army and save the city and its people. Fortunately, after our Bistro, although fortified with plenty of good food, we believe our guests behaved in a more moderate manner.

A toast to the new Beaujolais of 2024 was then proposed by Heather Perrott, in which everyone happily obliged. Indeed, the celebrations for welcoming the new Beaujolais are gaining popularity again in the UK, according to a report in The Times recently. Sales of Beaujolais are booming and people are gaining renewed interest in the Beaujolais Nouveau day. Back in the 1970s, such was the excitement that races were held, each November, to see who could get a bottle of the new Beaujolais back to the UK first. Of course, there is no need to do that if you live in Bognor because the new Beaujolais is always ready at our Bistro luncheon!

Murder Mystery Evening

Did you solve the murder?

A full cast of suspects, a detective and over 40 people gathered recently to solve the mystery of who murdered poor Lord Heathcliff. The enjoyably puzzling evening was another very successful social event organised by the Bognor Regis Town Twinning Association.

All the 14 Suspects dressed-up in costume according to their character and, throughout three different Acts, were closely questioned by guests in the room. This resulted in some hilarious revelations and rather unusual responses! After all who would have guessed that the pretty maid, was actually Lord Heathcliff's long lost daughter, or that the local policewoman had a part time job as a stripper-gram! And those were the revelations of only two of the 14 characters. Such unusual proceedings were overseen by the Detective, who kept Suspects and guests in order!

A simple two course meal was served in between the various Acts and definitely got the thumbs up from the room.

At the beginning of the evening, all the Suspects had taken a paper out of the hat and the murderer was the Suspect, who had taken the paper with X on it. But they had to keep it very quiet until the very end of the evening, when the guests found by discussion and deduction, that it was indeed the Butler whodunnit! Seems the Butler didn’t want to be fired so took advantage of the candlestick in the pool room to deal the deadly blow.

Boule Championships 2024

Another exciting Boules Finals took place recently at the Hotham Park boules piste in Bognor. This was the conclusion of the annual boules competition, which is organised by the Bognor Regis Town Twinning Association. Starting in March each year, teams play against each other, trying to gain points for a place in the Finals. Four teams eventually competed in the Semi-Finals on a very sunny Sunday in August. The winners of the semi-finals were the Amiaboules team and the Incrediboules team. These two teams then played each other in the Finals for the chance of winning the coveted cut glass trophy. It was an extremely close game, which had spectators on the edge of their seats at times, with skilful boule throwing from both sides as well as some occasional luck.

The winners were the ‘Incrediboules’ team, comprising Joelle Marsh, Leo Turner and Maralyn Green, who were congratulated and presented with the trophy by Twinning Chairman, Heather Perrott.

The game of boules or pétanque, pronounced ‘pet-onk’ as it is sometimes called, is played by around 20 million people in France. It is becoming increasingly popular in the UK and very much so in Bognor! Anyone can easily and quickly learn to play and enjoy this ancient sociable game, which is believed to have originated either in Egypt or from an ancient Greek game of tossing stones or coins in about 6 BC.

The purpose of the game is to win by throwing your boules to land closer to a smaller coloured ball, called a jack or cochonnet (which literally means piglet), than those of your opponent. In the past the game was played anywhere: on half-hardened places, sunken roads, farmyards and even in the sand dunes or meadowlands. Nowadays, whilst still being played in village squares across France, the game is gaining more importance by being played in specially constructed boulodromes.

Although boules was on the Summer Olympics programme way back in 1900, it has never been an official Olympic game. However, that is hopefully changing as Pétanque will be making its debut as an Olympic sport at the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics in Dakar. To this end, the Confédération Mondiale des Sports de Boules, which was created in 1985 by several international boules organizations specifically for this purpose, has been lobbying the Olympic committee since 1985 to make it part of the Olympic Games.

A Successful Visit by our German Twin Towns

Another very successful town twinning visit took place at the end of July, when 38 visitors from Bognor’s German twin towns of Trebbin and Weil-am-Rhein spent six days in Bognor. The Mayors and six young people from both twin towns were part of the visit. This was the first visit to Bognor from the twin towns since 2019 as Covid interrupted the regular round of visits between the three towns. All visitors were treated to a full programme of activities as well as social evenings and either stayed with individual hosts or in hotels.

On the first full day guests were taken to Goring to see a two-thirds reproduction of the Sistine Chapel ceiling before visiting Highdown Hill. Here the archaeologist, from Worthing museum, led a guided walk showing evidence of Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and Anglo Saxon occupation through artefacts found on the hill. Highdown Gardens were also visited before moving on to explore Littlehampton. At an evening reception for the visitors, the Bognor Regis Town Crier introduced the Mayor of Bognor Regis, Councillor Claire Needs. Mayor Needs spoke to welcome the Mayors of Bognor’s two twin towns and exchanged gifts with them.

The following day visitors travelled by train to the Amberley Chalk Pits Museum, spending the morning there before lunching at the Riverside Café. Despite the rain, many then took the train to Arundel and visited the various shops and cafes in the town, where it is understood a goodly number of cream teas were eaten!

The third day of activities started with a guided tour of Chichester Cathedral, followed by a free day in Chichester, giving visitors the opportunity to sightsee and shop. In the evening a Reception funded by the Bognor Regis Twinning Association consisted of welcome aperitifs, a two-course meal and riotous musical entertainment put on by members of the Bognor Association, which was so appreciated by the audience that they demanded an encore!

The last full day of the visit was for the individual hosts to spend more time with their guests and happily the beautifully warm weather continued. All too soon it was time for the visitors to return home after an action-packed visit. Hugs all round and even some tears at having to say goodbye to friends, new and old. The whole programme of activities, apart from the Council Reception, was funded by the Bognor Regis Twinning Association from monies raised for this purpose. Twin town, Weil am Rhein, has issued an invitation to Bognor Regis and Trebbin members to visit their town next year, in summer 2025.

Spring Ramble

On Saturday May 18 ^th 13 BRTA members walked 4 and a half miles from outside the Ship Inn Itchenor along the harbour coastal path to West Wittering and then back to Itchenor cross country. The weather forecast was for light rain but there was only one rain shower during the walk and the sun came out towards the end. The walkers then enjoyed a good lunch at The Ship Inn Itchenor before going home.

St Maur-des-Fossés exchange visit – 2024

Twenty adults from Bognor recently enjoyed a very successful French exchange visit to Bognor’s twin town of St Maur-des-Fossés, near Paris. Travelling by Eurostar to Paris and then by RER to the nearby town of St Maur-des-Fossés, guests were welcomed by their individual hosts into their homes for the duration of the visit. Not everyone could speak French but, as many of the hosts spoke good English, careful placement meant everyone felt relaxed and happy during their stay.

A programme for the visit, organised by Les Amis de Bognor Regis, included an outing to the Chateau de Vincennes, a former fortress and royal residence, with a talk given on the history of the castle. Guests also had the opportunity to visit the Abbaye de Saint-Maur, an old monastery, which is mostly in ruins, but a guided tour took visitors into the cellar and underground passageways not usually open to the public.

It wasn’t all monuments as St Maur-des-Fossés is the town in Ile-de-France with the largest number of food markets and a visit to one of these, a regular shopping venue for locals, was also on the programme. All have a huge range of high quality, fresh food products, with the market at La Varenne being the first to have over 100 traders. A veritable feast for the eyes and enough to make one very hungry!

There were also opportunities for visiting Paris, where the ongoing reconstruction of the burnt-out cathedral of Notre Dame could be seen. After a devastating fire in 2019, during which the roof and spire collapsed, the historic renovation of Notre Dame is now nearly 90% complete but at an estimated cost of 700 million Euros. Preparations for the 2024 Olympics, to be held this August in Paris, were also well underway and visible throughout the city centre. Riverboat trips down the Seine, walking through Les Tuileries, the Ile de Paris, the South Bank, visiting the Eiffel Tower, Les Invalides (Napoleon’s tomb), Les Halles, Galeries Lafayette, were all places visited by some of us on our city excursions.

On the last evening in St Maur-des-Fossés, the local association of Les Amis de Bognor Regis treated all 20 visitors from Bognor, with their French hosts, to a sumptuous three course meal in a local restaurant. Speeches from each side were made and thanks given to those who had helped make this exchange visit such a success, after a hiatus of several years, when the exchange visits had to be suspended due to Covid. Special thanks are owed to Mr. John Russell, whose tireless efforts for more than a year, on behalf of the Bognor Regis Twinning Association, resulted in a very successful visit. It is hoped that this very enjoyable visit will now form the basis for the return of regular annual exchanges and that friendships, old and new, that have been reinforced or begun, will continue the long-standing connections between our twin towns.

D-Day 80 Years On - Talk by Dave Smith

D-Day 80 Years On

D-Day 80 Years On was the subject of a very detailed talk, given recently by popular historian, Dave Smith. Planning for D-Day actually took place not far from Bognor and very close to Portsmouth. It was at Southwick House, which stands on the northern slopes of Portsdown Hill, where the preparations for Operation Overlord were laid. It was there that General Dwight Eishenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, took the decision to launch the Normandy invasion on 6 June 1944. You can still visit the house and see the Map Room but have to make an appointment to do so.

The date of 6 June was chosen because it fulfilled the requirements necessary for the beach landings. The weather forecast was good, there would be a full moon and, importantly, a half tide. Originally 2 other dates were considered, 5 June and 19 June. 5 June was discounted because of the bad weather forecast for the day before and 19 June was deemed too late. Several million men, tanks, landing craft, etc., were waiting secretly, in multiple locations, across the South Coast of England and there was a very real risk that waiting too long might lead to discovery. So, the date of 6 June became the date of D Day. This was fortunate as the weather turned out to be appalling on 19 June.

Dave Smith asked the audience what the D stood for in D Day. The answer was that it stands for Day. Apparently there were many D Days (Day Days), a name for the beginning of Operations during the War, but 6 June is the only one remembered by everyone.

Much effort had gone into covering up the true destination of D Day. Double agents fed wrong information back to Germany about possible invasions at Calais in July or even on the Norway coast. Inflatable tanks, trucks, airplanes and landing craft had been placed as decoys, even as far North as Scotland, to deceive reconnaissance aircraft. Decoy dummy paratroopers, known as Ruperts, were also dropped at 4 different locations on the morning of 6 June to lure the Germans away from the beaches of Normandy. The dummies self-destructed on landing.

These were just a few facts from Dave Smith’s presentation as his enthusiasm for his subject gave us many further insights into the planning before the invasion, the intricate detail of the invasion itself and what must have been a logistical nightmare to get everyone and everything to where it was needed before, during and in the days after the invasion. Dave Smith also recounted stories of a few of the soldiers, who had been part of D Day, as well as the personality clashes between some of the leading organisers of Operation Overlord. Town Mayor Cllr. Francis Oppler presents cheques at Civic Reception

On Wednesday 27th March 2024, Bognor Regis Town Council held their annual Civic Reception, hosted by the Mayor, Cllr. Francis Oppler, at ‘Seasons’ which was attended by our Chairman Heather Perrot and Vice-Chairman Ray Hagger.

The evening acts as an opportunity to thank the many organisations, charities and community groups who work tirelessly to provide opportunities, services and events for the people of Bognor Regis. Some of these organisations are thanked through the provision of Grant Aid funding, cheques for which were presented by Cllr. Oppler at the Civic Reception. Heather Perrot on behalf of the twinning association was presented a cheque for £400 which will help help support our youth activities in particular to support our youth programme during the visit by Weil Am Rhein and Trebbin in July.

Also present were our wonderful Town Crier, Jane Smith, and we enjoyed some rousing performances from the West Sussex Music ‘Urban Brass Band’, a group of students from around the locality, who recently won ‘gold’ at the Chichester Festival of Music, Dance and Speech.

An entertaining Quiz and a games evening

Over 80 people from four local Town Twinning Associations met recently to compete in a challenging Joint Quiz. Thirteen teams made up of members and friends from Bognor Regis, Angmering, and Littlehampton Associations joined together for the annual Quiz event.

The independent quizmasters for the evening, Ric and Sharon, set a wide variety of questions in the categories of Food & Drink, TV & Film, Mixed Music, Sport & Games, and European Geography. Teams could play a Joker in an attempt to double their scores, but only on one chosen round.

This year, Felpham Village Hall was a very welcome and warm venue for the occasion. All present were treated to a generous Ploughman’s supper halfway through the evening, whilst we were still puzzling over the picture quiz. A prize for the winning team and a raffle rounded off the evening.

Some weeks later the Bognor Regis association held a series of games evenings in various houses in the Bognor area. Mainly board or card games were played although shuffleboard and charades were also included in the evening at some locations. These social evenings form part of the ongoing programme for the Twinning Association.

Chairmans Report by Ray Hagger

Our constitution only allows me the Chairman to serve a three-year term and although I am today stepping down as Chairman it does not look like I am being allowed to return to the back benches.

With the support of the entire committee, I am pleased to share some achievements during my Chairmanship which include:

Re-establishing our link with Saint-Maur-Des Fossés following the winding up of the Adult Exchange Group and 22 of us will be visiting Saint Maur in April. I must thank John Russel and his sub committee in particular Maralyn Green and her friend Danny in Saint-Maur and David Roche,
A 36% increase in our membership over the last year alone whilst several other Twinning Associations in West Sussex have folded or are struggling to Survive. We now have 75 individual members.
A new website and blog which is constantly being kept up to date and attracting many visitors and some new members. The Website includes details of all events including our monthly foreign films. I would encourage all members to save to their phone home screen or computer desktop and to visit regularly. Please also feel free to share content with friends or on social media.
A new interpretation board with the support of the Bognor Regis Heritage & Arts Trust in Place Saint Maur following protracted negotiations with ADC over nearly two years.
Relocation of a bench donated by our twin town of Weil Am Rhein from a location near the Regis Centre bins the Boule Piste Hotham Park. We are now negotiating with the town council to arrange for the bench to be repainted/stained.

This year at well as visiting Saint-Maur-Des-Fossés, in July we are also hosting visitors from both Weil Am Rhein and Trebbin and we have just formed a sub- committee to organise a programme of activities. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, please speak to or email Heather or me.

I would also like to recognise the work Bob and Terry have undertaken over the last twenty years through their company Felpham Language Travel Limited in facilitating school visits from our twin town. Sadly the time has come to retire and to close the business but Bob and Terry remain on the committee and I am sure we will find ways to ensure the activities continue and we are also looking for families happy to host our young visitors from our win towns.

Social events continue to be important not just to raise money but to encourage contact and friendship amongst our members. We have planned a full programme for the coming year and Heather has put together a Social Programme which I hope you have bought with you, as she will be talking about it later, and perhaps reflect of some of the key highlights over the last year. I would however like to thank Maralyn Green for hosting the morning of Christmas Cheer, which was well attended, and visitors included our town mayor and of course Santa himself. A wonderful way to end the year.

Attendance at our Foreign films is on the increase and memorable films including “a Yak in the classroom” from Bhutan, and the award winning 2023 “The anatomy of a fall” which has been nominated at this years Global Globe as Best Film. And more recently the German film Blind “Date with Life”, an autobiographical comedy.. I would like to thank Mac Keight for all his efforts in keeping the Foreign Film programme on track.

The German Language group continues to meet monthly and if anyone would like further information, please speak to David Howard whose details are in the social programme. This group is for Fluent Speakers only, and not suitable for beginners.

Since the last AGM I have been appointed the Representative of the British-German Association for West Sussex and to date I have held two online meetings involving most of the British-German Town Twinning Associations in West Sussex. For the first meeting I was able to persuade the deputy head of mission at the German Embassy Ruediger Bohn to speak. I have also met with the Dr Markus Grüneisl, Chief Executive of BMW Group in the UK Managing Director of BMW in the UK followed by the BMW Mini plant at Cowley near Oxford.

Our association continues to remain active and innovative, and we continue to look at ways to encourage a younger membership to ensure the association’s future success. Since Brexit I believe our role as a twinning association is more important than ever to ensure we maintain links with our European partners.

Finally, I would again like to thank all the committee for their support and in particular Heather as Vice -Chairman without whom I could not do this job. I would also like to acknowledge the support of our President Sandra Daniels who is stepping down from the committee at this AGM but remains our President.

Mayor of Bognor Regis, Councillor Francis Oppler meets Santa

Two surprise guests met at the Morning of Christmas Cheer, hosted by the Bognor Town Twinning Association. Father Christmas met the Mayor of Bognor Regis, Councillor Francis Oppler, who came to wish Twinning members a very Happy Christmas. The Mayor was able to get an early taste of Christmas, in more ways than one. Santa came with a sack full of little gifts for everyone and there was opportunity to fill up many an empty tum on the Christmas food delights on offer : warm mince pies, stollen bites, lebkuchen, biscuits, cheeses, crudites, grapes, etc. To help get in the holly jolly mood, there was plenty of warm mulled wine to drink and, also, hot spiced apple juice for those preferring a non-alcoholic alternative. Roaring log fires and Christmas decorations helped everyone, including Santa, feel right at home and maybe also helped get Santa ready for his big night of the year. And we know he did very well on that night!

The Morning of Christmas Cheer was the last Town Twinning event for 2023 but a whole new programme of events starts in January.

Weil Am Rhein honour two retiring members from their committee

On November 15th two long time members have left the board - they have been honoured by Klaus Geese and Tonio Passlick for 36 years (Brigitte Wittkaemper) being vice president or in other functions and 18 years (Heinz Meindel) as member of the board of the twinning association Weil am Rhein. Zwei Vorstandsmitglieder der ersten Stunden wurden am Mittwochabend im Rahmen einer Vorstandssitzung des Vereins zur Förderung und Pflege von Städtepartnerschaften Weil am Rhein verabschiedet: Brigitte Wittkämper nach 36 Jahren und Heinz Meindel nach 18 Jahren im Vorstand. Der stellvertretende Vorsitzende Klaus Geese und Gründungsmitglied Tonio Paßlick würdigten in Vertretung des erkrankten Vorsitzenden Christian Leitherer die Verdienste der beiden inzwischen aus dem Vorstand ausgeschiedenen und nach wie vor engagierten Mitglieder mit Geschenkkörben und einer wertschätzenden Rückschau.

We said farewell to two log standing board members on Wednesday evening at a board meeting of the association for the promotion and maintenance of town twinning in Weil am Rhein: Brigitte Wittkämper after 36 years and Heinz Meindel after 18 years on the board. The deputy chairman Klaus Geese and founding member Tonio Paßlick, representing the Christian Leitherer Chairman who was unwell, honoured the achievements of the two members, who have since left the board and are still committed, with gift baskets and an appreciative review.

Paßlick schilderte als Zeitzeuge die Hintergründe für die Entstehung des Vereins. Im Herbst des Jahres 1986 habe er in geheimer Mission und im Auftrag von Oberbürgermeister Peter Willmann mit dem damaligen Vorstand des Vereins in Bognor Regis einen Termin im Frühjahr 1987 ausgehandelt und dafür zugesagt, dass in Weil am Rhein umgehend ein Verein gegründet würde. Für Bognor Regis war dies eine Voraussetzung für die Städte-Partnerschaft. Zuvor hatte die „Twinning Association“ in Bognor Regis auf dieser Basis bereits eine offizielle Verbindung mit Saint-Maur-des-Fossés bei Paris.

How the club came about

As a contemporary witness, Paßlick described the background to the creation of the club. In the autumn of 1986, on a secret mission and on behalf of Mayor Peter Willmann, he negotiated a date in the spring of 1987 with the then board of the association in Bognor Regis and promised that an association would be founded immediately in Weil am Rhein. For Bognor Regis this was a prerequisite for the town twinning. The “Twinning Association” in Bognor Regis previously had an official connection with Saint-Maur-des-Fossés near Paris on this basis.

Februar 1987 dann Vorsitzender wurde, übernahm Brigitte Wittkämper das Amt der Schriftführerin und behielt es 15 Jahre lang. Auf Blaschguda folgte 1993 Renata Buck. Mit Tonio Paßlick als Vorsitzendem im Jahr 2000 wurde Wittkämper stellvertretende Vorsitzende. Das Amt behielt sie 16 Jahre lang. Als dann 2017 Christian Leitherer den Vorsitz übernahm und Klaus Geese Stellvertreter wurde, übernahm Wittkämper als Beisitzerin immer noch sehr wichtige Aufgaben, wie Paßlick in seiner Würdigung betonte. Denn sie hatte 36 Jahre lang dafür gesorgt, dass die rund 50 Gäste bei den Treffen in Weil am Rhein alle drei Jahre auch von privaten Gastgebern aufgenommen wurden.

Host organized

When the former city youth worker Peter Blaschguda became chairman when the club was founded on February 5, 1987, Brigitte Wittkämper took over the office of secretary and kept it for 15 years. Blaschguda was followed by Renata Buck in 1993. With Tonio Paßlick as chairman in 2000, Wittkämper became deputy chairman. She held the position for 16 years. When Christian Leitherer took over the chairmanship in 2017 and Klaus Geese became deputy, Wittkämper still took on very important tasks as an assessor, as Paßlick emphasized in his appreciation. For 36 years, she had ensured that the around 50 guests at the meetings in Weil am Rhein were also hosted by private hosts every three years.

Darüber hinaus fragte sie auch die Gastgeber für die Delegation aus Trebbin beim Altweiler Straßenfest an. Für die Trebbiner war sie zudem seit der offiziellen Städtepartnerschaft mit Weil am Rhein 1990 Ansprechpartnerin für alle organisatorischen Fragen. Sie sei damit immer das verlässliche und unverzichtbare Rückgrat der offiziellen Begegnungen gewesen, sagte Paßlick. Inzwischen hat Andrea Kuntzmann diese Aufgaben übernommen.

Aktiv bei der „Table Ronde“

Heinz Meindel war als Gründungsmitglied seit 2005 Schriftführer und bekleidete dieses Amt bis 2023, als im August bedingt durch die Pandemie drei Mitgliederversammlungen zusammenfasst worden waren. Paßlick würdigte die verlässliche und schnelle Erledigung aller protokollarischen Tätigkeiten und sein Engagement in verschiedenen Bereichen. Er war unter anderem aktiv engagiert beim „Table Ronde“, einer Gruppe von Hüninger und Weiler Bürgern, die sich mit den Beziehungen zwischen Huningue und Weil am Rhein befassten. Meindel war auch bei vielen Reisen nach Trebbin und Bognor Regis beteiligt und Gastgeber für viele Freunde aus den Partnerstädten.

Active at the “Table Ronde”

As a founding member, Heinz Meindel was secretary since 2005 and held this office until 2023, when three general meetings were held in August due to the pandemic. Paßlick praised the reliable and quick completion of all protocol activities and his commitment in various areas. Among other things, he was actively involved in the “Table Ronde”, a group of Hüninger and Weiler citizens who dealt with the relationships between Huningue and Weil am Rhein. Meindel was also involved in many trips to Trebbin and Bognor Regis and hosted many friends from the twin towns.

Benefit concert featuring Baroque Quartet "Willa Musica"

St. Gallus church in Ötlinger

On Tuesday the 5th December at 7 pm the Weiler Lions Club will host a benefit concert with my baroque quartet "Willa Musica" at the Ötlinger church. Christian Leitherer (Chalumeau, recorder), Tonio Paßlick (recorder), Barbara Leitherer(Viola da Gamba) and the harpist and organist Dieter Lämmlin have prepared a program with works by Telemann, Keller, Couperin, Frescobaldi and other composers. Tickets for ten euros are available in advance at the Town Hall Pharmacy in Weil am Rhein. The proceeds are intended for social purposes (especially projects in the region). Church opens at 6:30pm on concert day.

An Afternoon to Remember: Bognor Regis Twinning Association’s Beaujolais Bistro Extravaganza

An enjoyable afternoon with fellow members and guests.

Last Saturday, the Roland Rank Centre in Aldwick was abuzz with excitement as the Bognor Regis Twinning Association hosted its highly anticipated annual Beaujolais Bistro event. The soirée, which had been sold out a month in advance, lived up to its reputation as a delightful evening of camaraderie, exquisite French cuisine, and a generous spirit.

Behind the scenes, a team of dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the event. From preparing the delectable dishes to setting up the hall with meticulous care, their efforts showcased the true spirit of community. As the saying goes, many hands make light work, and it was evident that the collaborative efforts of the volunteers were instrumental in making the evening a resounding success.

Special recognition is due to the Vice Chairman, Heather Perrott, and Maralyn Green, whose dedication and hard work were indispensable to the event’s smooth execution. Their commitment to the cause and attention to detail played a crucial role in creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all attendees.

Ray Hagger, the Chairman of the Bognor Regis Twinning Association, took a moment to raise a toast to this year’s Beaujolais. His toast to this year’s Beaujolais Coupled with our twin towns if Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, Weil Am Rhein & Trebbin set the tone for a night filled with laughter, good company, and the spirit of giving.

The culinary journey of the evening was nothing short of spectacular. Attendees were treated to a sumptuous three-course meal that began with a classic French onion soup, setting the tone for the evening’s gastronomic adventure. The main course featured slow-cooked Mediterranean chicken, a dish that transported guests to the sun-kissed landscapes of southern France. The grand finale was a delightful plum clafoutis, a sweet ending to an evening filled with culinary delights.

Beyond the joyous festivities, the event also served a noble purpose. Through the collective efforts of everyone involved, the Bognor Regis Twinning Association managed to raise at least £730. This significant sum will undoubtedly contribute to the organization’s initiatives and further strengthen the bonds of friendship between Bognor Regis and its twinned counterparts.

As the afternoon ended the echoes of laughter and the warmth of shared memories lingered in the air. The success of the Beaujolais Bistro was a testament to the power of community, volunteerism, and the unwavering commitment of individuals like Heather Perrott, and Maralyn Green. The Bognor Regis Twinning Association’s annual gathering not only celebrated the spirit of twinning but also showcased the remarkable generosity that thrives within the community. Here’s to another year of fostering friendship, goodwill, and more delightful Beaujolais Bistro's in Bognor Regis.

Visit to Saint-Maur-Des-Fossés, Confirmed

After several Zoom meetings with our friends in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, we are pleased to be able to announce a date for our visit to Saint-Maur next year. This will be Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th April, 2024.

We have established that Eurostar is the best and cheapest way to travel, as there are no additional charges for luggage. We would make our own way to and from London Saint Pancras, and onward travel from Paris Gare du Nord to Saint-Maur would be by RER (suburban train with one change). At the moment Eurostar tickets for these dates are on sale for about £100 return, but of course we cannot guarantee that they will stay at that price.

We would welcome former members of the French Exchange Group to join us but they would need to join the Twinning Association first. Please visit our membership page here

If would like to take part in this visit, to fill in the application form and send it, with a deposit cheque, payable to BRTA, of £100 per person, to David Roche, 2 Lakeland Avenue, North Bersted, Bognor Regis, PO21 5FA, by the 22nd October at the latest.

Any discrepancies in the price of tickets will be sorted out after tickets have been purchased.

Our French friends are going to arrange a meal together on the Saturday evening, but many of the activities are likely to be arranged by your host and you may be responsible for your own costs, This is a new venture and we must expect new things!

At the moment, our friends in Saint-Maur are compiling a list of hosts. Rest assured, that if not enough hosts can be found, and you are unlucky enough not to have one, your deposit will be returned in full. Please note that no-one will be eligible to come on the trip who has not joined the Twinning Association by the time of booking . There is still time to join and it is only £8 per individual or £15 per family!

Link with our Twin Town of Saint-Maur-Des Fosses Explained

It’s taken most of my nearly three years as Chairman of Bognor Regis Twinning Association to get an interpretation board installed in Place Saint Maur to explain the link with Saint-Maur-des-Fosses but we are finally there.

Thanks to Heather Perrott and Maralyn Green for the content, Victoria Owens of Vinco marketing for the Art Work, James Halson of Top level Designs for the printing, Ken Blaimires of the Pier Trust/BR Heritage and Arts Trust and Bognor Town Council for funding the artwork and Installation, Bognor Regis Town Force for the installation itself, Joanne Davies at BTC for having to put up with my regular emails and phone calls, ADC for granting permission and everyone else that helped.

I am not sure why the artwork has buckled but hopefully that can be sorted.

Reflections of trip to Trebbin by our young people

The Trebbin trip was a wonderful experience. Not only did we stay with the kindest of hosts, but we got to learn all about the culture in Germany, which myself, as a humanities student, found profoundly interesting.

We partook in a range of activities where we got to learn a lot about Trebbin’s past, as well as visiting Berlin with our hosts. I gained a lot of knowledge around this, which was incredibly valuable as I am studying history at A-level.

Not only did we learn if the past, but we met many new people and created many new experiences that I will remember for the rest of my life. We became friends with Paula and Laura who made our stay comfortable and it was lovely to be able to make friends with people our own age.

One day we visit the open mines where we got to see the unique work that Germany is doing to fix the land scarring which they leave behind. This introduced us to the idea that perhaps we should begin to also try this in England because it turns a once horrible eyesore into an idyllic camping site and holiday destination.

Overall, it is an experience I will never forget and one I will always be grateful for being given the chance to experience.

Germany was amazing although I barely knew any German at all!

First of all, I must say that the trip was very well organised and planned ahead, from the moment Bob met us at Bognor Train station all the way to Trebbin and back.

It was great to see how well I got on with the different age group. I have learnt a lot from this trip, like the coal mine which was very interesting, or the historical trip to Potsdam or even the Berlin wall.

The evening parties were very entertaining and I had the chance to try traditional German food with a very friendly atmosphere.

We met two lovely German students who were very kind and friendly, their English was really good. In addition, we met a young German band from a music school and we exchanged numbers and still stay in contact. My host family were very nice, they gave me and Sam a very warm welcome. We still stay in touch.

I enjoyed this trip so much that it was difficult to find any negatives! It was such an amazing experience which I will definitely treasure for the rest of my life.

Weil Am Rhein Bench Relocated

Many Years ago we were presented by a Bench by Weil Am Rhein. Unfortunately it was installed near to the soon redevloped Regis Center adjacent to some bins - not the best location.

After much negotiation the bench has now been relocated in Hotham Park adjacent to the Boule pitch regularly used by our membership.

It has also been confirmed that the interpretation board explaining the towns links with Saint-Maur-Des-Fosses will soon be installed in Place Saint Maur, possibly as early as this week

Boules Champions 2023

Hotham Park recently saw the much-anticipated Finals of a popular Boules Tournament, organised by the Bognor Regis Town Twinning Association. The deserving champions were presented with the coveted cut-glass trophy by Chairman Mr Ray Hagger. The winners were Maralyn Green, Stephanie Mezulis and Joelle Marsh, of the ‘Incrediboules’ team.

The boules tournament had brought together teams to compete over several months, thereby accruing points towards a final score. The four top teams played in the semi-finals on a surprisingly sunny day, with friends and supporters taking advantage of the shade. The two teams left standing then faced each other in the long-awaited final. The ‘Off Piste’ team got off to a flying start but the ‘Incrediboules’ team slowly caught up and went on to win the match. Throughout the semi-finals and finals there were some close games and skillful boules throwing, which drew appreciation from the audience as well as having them on the edge of their seats.

Boules is an ancient game, played widely across France in town squares. It is a simple and easy game to learn but, like all games, takes a while to get really skillful, unless you are a natural!

The purpose of the game is to win by throwing your boule along the playing area or ‘piste’, so that it lands closer to the small ball (called the jack or cochonnet) than those of your opponent.

The game of boules was originally played by taking a long run up to the piste and then hurling the boule. Then later, due to one of the top players in France being badly afflicted with rheumatism, new rules were formulated which allowed him to continue playing. The new rules had players standing still with both feet firmly placed on the ground while throwing the boule. This was the game of pétanque, which came from the words pieds tanqués, meaning feet firmly planted on the ground (from old Provencal French).

Saint-Maur-Des-Fosses & Visit from Weil Am Rhein and Trebbin

We have received an invitation to visit Saint-Maur-Des-Fosses during the week ending 28th April 2024 and more information will follow once the exact dates been agreed (depends on transport/costs etc.) They currently have around 20 families willing to host, but hosting should not be an issue.

A separate Rambling trip to Saint Maur is being considered for June or September 2024

Finally a date for your diaries, we will be welcoming visitors from Weil Am Rhein and Trebbin from the 23rd - 28th July 2024. We will be expecting 40-50 visitors. We will as usual be looking for hosts among our membership, The Bognor Regis Concert Band is planning to hold a Big Band Weekend 27th - 28th July which will hopefully include bands from Weil Am Rhein

Good Company on a Glorious Summers Day

Around six members recently participated in an enjoyable 4.5 mile woodland walk around the Slindon Estate taking in a Bat Barn, housing many varieties of bats, and a folly. The Walk arranged by David Roche was followed by a most enjoyable light lunch at The Spur, Slindon.

Our next event is a Coffee Morning on the 1st July.

New Town Twinning Interpretation to be installed in Place Saint Maur

I am delighted to inform you that an Interpretation Board explaining the link between Place Saint Maur and our Twin Town of Saint-Maur-Des-Fosses will be installed shortly. The artwork was prepared by Victoria Owens nee Hilditch of Vinco Marketing and printed by James Halson of Top Level Designs. The Plinth was donated and artwork/printing funded by The Pier Trust CIC (Bognor Regis Heritage & Arts Trust). Thanks to Heather Perrott and Maralyn Green for preparing the Artwork.

We are now just waiting on ADC and Bognor Regis to install the Interpretation Board which should hopefully take place in the coming weeks.

At some point we hope to invite our Mayor Cllr. Francis Oppler together with the Mayor of Saint-Maur-Des-Fosses Sylvian Berrios and others including Ken Blaimires of The Bognor Heritage and Arts Trust, Victoria Owens and others involved to an official unveiling. Unfortunately the file size of the artwork is too large to post here.

Stephen Goodheart appointed Town Council Representative

I am delighted to announce that following the rent local elections a long term enthusiast for Town Twinning and member of our association Stephen Goodheart has been appointed our new Town Council representative.

Stephen has been instrumental in re-establishing links with St Maur-Des-Fosses; having visited the town along with our Vice Present Heather Perrott and Phil Butler at the invitation of their mayor last year. In this regard our French Sub Committee have been working to strengthen our ties and we have a joint meeting on the 30th June with a view to a possible visit to St Mau-Des-Fosses next year.

I am pleased our former town council representative and President Sandra Daniells has agreed to continue on the committee.

Visit to Trebbin

A very full programme enjoyed by us all

19 members of Bognor Twinning Association including three young people part funded by Bognor Town Council, and a similar number from another of our twin towns Weil Am Rhein visited Trebbin from the 13th to the 18th June as part of a three way exchange. We were also joined by and entertained 20 youngsters from Bonds Big Band from Weil Am Rhein.

The party from Weil Am Rhein included their Lord Mayor Woolfgang Dietz, their deputy Mayor Rudolf Kruger, Head of office (Town Clerk) Annette Huber and her deputy, Clerk of Central Services Daniella Kaiser. Bognor Town Council were representative from past Mayor and Town Councillor Stephen Goodheart who along with his wife Andrea are members of our Association.

On the first full day we were entertained to a full programme as guests of their Town Mayor Ronny Haase with a visit to the historic village of Blankensee (Within Trebbins jurisdiction) and a farmers museum, which demonstrates life and economy of the time. The museum is based in the oldest house in the village dating from 1649; Markish Centre-floor house covered in a reed thatched roof. Following a light lunch courtesy of the town council we visited Schlos Blankensee palace dating back to 1446 the originally home of Hans von Thumen. The property is used for Conferences and events. Finally we visited the architectually interesting The St. John's Church (formerly: Evangelical Johannine Church after the Revelation of St. John) is a religious community founded in Berlin in 1926 by the religious and church reformer Joseph Weibenberg

Since 1975 it has borne the name Johannische Kirche. Their we were entertained by the town Mayor Ronny Haase, on the church organ.

That evening their was a Civic Reception held at Schonhagen Airport. The airport is around the size of Farnborough with two tarmac and one grass runway catering for executive jets and light aircraft. A range of Aviation related industries are based at the airport. Gifts were presented by Lord Mayor Wolfgang Dietz representing Weil Am Rhein (a range of locally produced goods) and Stehen Goodheart representing Bognor Regis (A Tin of Sunshine)

The second day involved a Coach Trip to the Lusatian Lakes created out of former lignite (brown coal) open caste mines and a visit to one of the last remaining mines. The Lusatian area is also home is also home to the Sorbs, an indigenous slavik race and most signs were in both languages. The day ended at ScharfesGelb producers of Eierlikr (German Egg Liqueur) essentially alcoholic eggnog produced in a range if flavours included classic.

On the Friday we visited Potsdam and the Museum Barberini which has the largest collection of Monets outside Paris, as well as pictures by Renoir, Morisot, Sisley, Pissarro, Cross, Signac and other impressionist artists. We also visited the Cecilinhof,. It was in this English Tudor manor house was the location of the Potsdam Conference in 1945 where the leaders of the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States made important decisions effecting the shape of post war Europe. We then returned to Trebbin stopping at an Asparagus Farm for Lunch. having been joined by the town mayor Ronny Haase. In the evening the Twinning Reception a dinner and party with entertainment provided by young musicians from a local Music School. Their were also speeches and votes of thanks from Christian Leitherer, Chairman of Weil Am Rhein Twinning Association and Ray Hagger, Chairman of Bognor Regis.

The Saturday was a free day with most members and their hosts visiting Berlin. In the evening we were entertained by Weil Am Rhein's Bonds Big Band in a local park

We welcome both Trebbin and Weil Am Rhein to Bognor Regis in late July 2024.

The German Hyperinflation Crisis of 1923

Hyperinflation in Germany was the rather topical subject of a recent talk given by popular historian, Dave Smith, to the Bognor Regis town Twinning Association. This was, however, German Hyperinflation in 1923. The illustrated talk, aided by cartoons, newspaper articles and photographs of Germany at the time, gave a sense of the scary times when prices doubled every hour, until a loaf of bread might cost a billion Marks. Paper money was so worthless that people used it as wallpaper or even to make dresses! Dave Smith’s well-researched talk also went into the causes of this crisis, resulting from massive debts built up in World War I, and hefty war reparations. These devastating problems ultimately contributed, along with financial reverberations from the Wall Street Crash, to leaving the way open for the rise of Hitler and the outbreak of World War II, something predicted by some wise people two decades earlier at the end of World War I.

Since the talk, members have also enjoyed a sociable Games evening, which was held in various houses across Bognor. Games on offer ranged from Shuffleboard, to card games, team games and Telestrations, where drawing abiliy is not a requirement, fortunately! Food and refreshments on offer were very much appreciated by all.

Mayor John Barrett presents BRTA Cheque for £350

Chairman Ray Hagger and Vice President Heather Perrott Recently attended a Civic Reception hosted by outgoing Mayor John Barrett and were presented with a cheque in the sum of £350 as a contribution towards to cost of taking three young people to Weil Am Rhein.

Whilst this was a significant reduction on previous years your committee elected to continue to fund three young people from the town toparticipate in this years trip to Weil Am Rhein but this will need to be reviewed next year.

In the current climate the were many calls on Town Council Funds with many worthy causes require increased funding due to the recession such as the Bognor Food bank but hopefully.

A successful year

A warm and friendly AGM was held by the Bognor Regis Twinning Association at the Regis School of Music in Sudley Road. Another successful year of Town Twinning was praised by the Chairman, Mr Ray Hagger. The previous year, 2022, had benefitted from a very enjoyable social programme with rambles, games evenings, talks, coffee mornings, boules tournament, a Safari Supper, a quiz evening and the ever-popular Beaujolais Bistro.

The 2022 social programme finished in December with a Morning of Christmas Cheer at which Father Christmas made an appearance with a sack full of goodies, presumably for those who had been good! Log fires and a table laden with Christmas bites, certainly set everyone up for Christmas.

The highlight of the year was the 5 day visit by members to Weil am Rhein, in southern Germany, staying with hosts. Coach outings on three of those days to France, Switzerland and various places in Germany, organised by the Weil am Rhein Twinning Association, were thoroughly enjoyed. Evenings there were occupied by a Civic Reception at the Town Hall and a special banquet with entertainment, both in our honour.

Mr Hagger, who was unanimously welcomed for a third year as Chairman, also spoke about our French twin town of St-Maur-des-Fossés and how, after the disbandment of the French Exchange Group in Bognor, the Twinning Association will be considering how to further strengthen our relationship with this town.

Mrs Heather Perrott, Vice Chairman and Life Honorary Vice President, later outlined the equally full social programme arranged for 2023 and also referred to this year’s 5 day visit to Trebbin, near Berlin. The next local event here will be our annual Joint Quiz evening in March, with ploughmans supper, organised along with three other town Twinning Associations in West Sussex.

British German Association planning first regional online meeting in May

Ray Hagger reports on meeting with other regional representatives

Our Chairman Ray Hagger who was recently appointed the BGA Representative last week met with all the other BGA representatives together with Dr Susanne Frane head of the Section for Culture and Education at The German Embassy. It was clear the German Embassy are super keen to promote and help strengthen Town Twinning and highlighted several resources and groups we can have access to in particular associated with Universities, German Business and Schools. The BGA Youthbridge programme is also a great vehicle to help us get into schools teaching German. The Embassy are also looking at ways the BGA regional representatives can be introduced to local German business and others with an interest in Germany.

The representatives discussed a number of issues in the regions including how we can support towns where the twinning is council led etc. There was lot of positivity and all the regional representatives came away from the meeting very enthusiastic as both the BGA and German Embassy are clearly working hard to support Town Twinning between the UK and Germany.

BRTA seek to strengthen ties with Saint-Maur-Des-Fosses

Your committee have resolved to set up a working party to looking into ways to strengthen our relationship with Saint-Maur-Des-Fosses and get Town Twinning back on track following the dissolution of the French Exchange Group. We have many challenges not least fund raising have we had to start from scratch.

We have however made great progress in a short terms and have currently got six people who have agreed to sit on the working party three of have lived or had a home in France and are French Speakers. Thanks to David Roach; John Russell; Maralyn Green, Joelle Marsh, Laraine Nash & Helen Thompson.

As regards the Interpretation Board the text and photographs have been agreed and we are seeking ex Mayors Stephen Goodheart's input as he visited and met with the Mayor of Saint-Maur-Des-Fosses last year. Victoria Owens (nee Hilditch) of Vimco Marketing is all lined up to undertake the design and has introduced us to some printers. The board itself is being supplied by the Bognor Regis Arts & Heritage Trust who have also agreed to pay the cost of the Artwork & Printing. Installation will be undertaken by the Bognor Regis Town Force and the cost of installation is kindly being funded by the Town Council

Ray Hagger appointed as the British German Association Regional Representative for West Sussex

Ray Hagger Chairman of Bognor Twinning Association is honoured to recently been appointed as the British German Associations Regional Representative for West Sussex.

The BGA is the civil-society hub for British-German relations in the UK, promoting mutual understanding and friendship between the UK and German. They enjoy Royal Patronage of HRH the Duke of Kent, and there work is endorsed by the German Embassy in London and the British Embassy in Berlin. The BGA are British sister organisation of the Deutsch-Britische Gesellschaft in Germany.

Their activities include guidance and support to British German Twinning Association's and support to Schools Teaching German through their Youthbridge Programme.

The BGA is a UK registered charity and receives no regular financial support from any Government, so rely primarily on philanthropic donations and legacies.

With a surprise visit from Santa

Santa did indeed arrive at the Twinning’s annual Morning of Christmas Cheer. In his bright red suit and curly white beard, Santa even brought with him a sack full of little gifts for everyone. Maybe a surplus from his busy workshop?

With roaring log fires and Christmas decorations, Maralyn hosted a taste of Christmas to come, just a week before the big day. To get in the jolly mood, there was plenty of warm mulled wine to drink and also hot spiced apple juice for those preferring a non-alcoholic alternative. Stepping into the dining room, you found a table spread full of Christmas delights: warm mince pies, stolen bites, , lebkuchen, Christmas biscuits, chocolates, cheeses, crudites, grapes, fruits, etc. Certainly our tums were very happy too!

For all who came along, it was a chance to meet a very jovial Santa … and maybe even drop a hint as to what you wanted for Christmas! … as well as to round off the enjoyable and varied Twinning social calendar of the year, whilst wishing friends old and new a very good Christmas holiday.

Beaujolais Bistro a Huge Success

Glasses raised to this year's Beaujolais

The annual Beaujolais Bistro luncheon, run by the Bognor Twinning Association, was once again a resounding success. One of the highlights of the busy social Twinning calendar, the event also includes a popular sampling of the new Beaujolais, together with a substantial three course luncheon with a French flavour. All held in the spacious Rowland Rank Centre with its 50 places sold out, well before the date.

Mrs Heather Perrott, Honorary Life Vice-President, welcomed members and their guests and mentioned that although all power had gone off in the Rowland Rank Centre some days before the Bistro, no doubt due electrical problems occurring during the heavy storms we’d been having, fortunately it had been restarted in time for the luncheon! Sigh of relief from all involved that heating and cooking facilities were once again working well! Mr Ray Hagger, Twinning Chairman, then followed this good news by leading everyone in a toast to the new Beaujolais of 2022.

The Beaujolais Bistro is held to welcome the arrival of this year’s new Beaujolais wine. In France, the release of the new young wine, on the third Thursday in November, is celebrated with music and festivals. The Bognor Twinning Association decided to have their own festivities and has now been celebrating annually for nearly 30 years. Not surprisingly, places at the luncheon have become hot tickets.

The menu offered this year comprised of a French onion soup, followed by a main course of Poulet au miel et à la moutarde (Honey Mustard Chicken) and a dessert of Clafoutis with plum sauce and cream. All varied dietary requirements are catered for, with a vegetarian alternative also being available. The Bistro finished with tea, coffee and mints, while those lucky enough to win in the raffle, collected their prizes.

The next event on the busy social calendar will be a Morning of Christmas Cheer before a whole new programme starts in January.

Reflections - Safari Supper

A Sociable evening enjoyed by all

A very successful Safari Supper was enjoyed by members of Bognor Regis Twinning Association and their friends. A Safari Supper is sometimes called a Progressive Dinner. Another name could be The Surprising Roaming Dinner as, although rules can vary, the way it was set up this time was to give a series of surprises to everyone throughout the evening.

The surprises were that the various hosts never knew who would turn up at their door, just the number of people coming to the house. And the guests also didn’t know who they would meet at each course. Of course, secrecy was all important! It all worked a treat and, as the house venues were spread throughout Bognor, Bersted, Felpham, Aldwick and Pagham, it was definitely an enjoyable roaming evening too.

Everyone contributed to the evening, either by hosting a starter course or a main course, or making a dessert. And, with plenty of participants and venues, it was an evening to meet lots of different people, as no couple met the same people at their starter venue than they would meet at their main course venue. For £10 per head, it was a brilliant social event… as well as a tum filling one! If anyone would like to know more how to set up such a Dinner, do get in touch.

Our next event, taking place in November, is the ever-popular Beaujolais Bistro. A 3 course luncheon, where one can fill that tum again and sample this year’s new Beaujolais as well as other wines. All for an inclusive £18 per person.

Film Review - Parallel Mothers

Review of our November Foreign Film Parallel Mothers

As part of our monthly Foreign Films programme on Monday the 14th of December many of us attended one of the most enjoyable foreign Films yet “Parallel Mothers.” The Film opened with photographer, Janis (Penélope Cruz), taking pictures of a gentleman named Arturo. Afterward, over a bottle of wine, they talk, ending up in a night of passion in her bed. Moving on Janis, in a maternity hospital, preparing to have his child.

It is at the hospital (Milena Smit), also heavily pregnant, enters the scene. She and Janis are in the same ward; and discover they have a lot in common. Janis named after Janis Joplin is approaching forty Ana is less than half Janis’s age. Janis gives birth to Cecilia, and Ana to Anita. The babies, though safely delivered, are placed under observation before being returned to their mothers.

In the hospital, Ana is visited by her mother, Teresa, an actress by profession. Having been offered the lead in a play she goes on tour; at a time, her daughter needs her most.

Artouro refuses to accept he is the father stating the child bears no resemblance prompting Janis to take a paternity test and you can guess the rest.

After a chance meeting and having discovered Ana’s Anita had suffered cot death. Janis subsequently employees Ana as a nanny.

Earlier in the film talking to Arturo, who is a forensic anthropologist, she asks about the possibility of excavating the grave of her great-grandfather, who was killed during the rule of General Franco.

Janis wants to know the truth about her child, and having acquired that truth, she hastens to keep the truth to herself, until conscience impels her to bring the facts to light and come clean to Ana.

A well scripted and acted film keeps you enthralled.

Ana has a child’s innocence, and she may not be the cleverest, yet her awareness of right and wrong is instinctive. “Parallel Mothers” is a beautifully forgiving and memorable film. At the end of the film, we see the people of Janis home village, inspecting the now open grave. The move concludes with Cecilia, now a little girl, at a graveside, looking down at the dead.

Our next foreign film is Who do you think I am staring Juliette Binoche at the Picturedrome, 8pm Monday 12 ^th December and promises to be an equally enthralling film.

Safari Supper a Great Sucess

A great social evening enjoyed by all

We recently held our first ever Twinning Safari Supper, which was enjoyed by 25 people. It was a really nice event and a great chance to meet new people as we moved around the town for different courses of excellent food. Maralyn Green and Sue Crockford masterminded this event, which went off without a hitch, and thanks go to them for the work they put in, and especially to Maralyn, who opened her house to everyone for dessert and coffee at the end of the evening.

In Memory of our Glorious Queen Elizabeth 11

For most of us, myself included, Queen Elizabeth is the only British monarch we have known; throughout her life she undertook her duties with impartiality, integrity, grace. Her devotion to duty is unparalleled in this modern world.

The death of the queen is the end of an era. The coronation of King Charles III means change is on its way, and at a time when some are questioning whether to monarchy should continue.

However I believe she has been the glue that has held our nation together during some difficult times; and I am sure that King Charles the III will continue her legacy.

Our Thought and sympathies are will the Royal Family at this sad time.

Our Young People Report on their experiences in Weil

"A once in a lifetime opportunity I will never forget"

I was one of three young people lucky enough to visit Weil am Rhein and stay with a lovely host family learning so much about their lives and the different things they do! I enjoyed every moment of the trip, and it was a great experience for me that I will never forget. Spending time with new people I met and getting to know them was great hearing about their lives and how different they are, staying with my host family showed me so much more than what I thought I knew like what foods they eat and different traditions they have.

I enjoyed Europa Park the most during the week, it was the best theme park I have been to and was m uch better than any theme park in England. I also enjoyed the whole week, going to the water park and walking around Basel and even the motor museum in France, it was all a great experience that I loved.

Having the Scouts cook us dinner and hearing about how different their scouting was compared to our scouting was great and very interesting. The food was great but listening to how they did things and what they have done in scouting was so interesting. I loved asking questions about how they did things and loved answering the questions they had for us.

It was a very memorable week and I had a very good time. I feel very lucky to have got the experience and spent it learning new things about Germany and Weil am Rhein.

Germany was a really fun experience. The car museum in Mulhouse contained many fascinating international cars with a broad range of vintage and modern vehicles. The historic tour of Basel was also very interesting. Europa Park was exciting and thrilling, especially with the range of rides and different zones representing different nations. Hiking up the hills of the Black Forest was very enjoyable, but the hot weather made it really difficult. However, the rollercoaster on the way down from the top made it all worthwhile. Overall, the trip was different and a once in a lifetime opportunity I will never forget.

My time in Weil am Rhein, as well as France and Switzerland, was amazing and a great experience I will not forget. My highlights were going to Europa Park, it was much bigger than any theme park I had ever been to in the UK and I had a good time there going on a lot of the big rides with my favourite being the Silver Star! As well as a trip to the Laguna Water Park to cool down in the hot weather. I want to thank my host family for being so warm welcoming to me and also for allowing me to carry on with my passion for running as I managed to fit in a trip to Parkrun on Saturday morning which was fun and great to meet everyone there.

Picture Refurbishment will be huge boost for BRTA Foreign Films

Refurbishment Works Update

The Picturedrome Foyer Refurbishment Works which were significantly impacted by Covid are now back on track. Bognor Town Council and the Picturdome have today issued a press release to confirm the refurbishment works are back on track. Picturedrome Cinemas now lease the full footprint of the building, acquiring the lease of the origional restaurant. This will be incorporated into the main building to significantly improve their disabled access to the main foyer, a new retail stand and to the beautiful historic screen pictured above.. Completed is expected Quarter four this year, 2022 significantly enhancing the experience for those attending our foreign film evenings.

The refurbished foyer will have a full reinstated terrazzo marble floor, bespoke stained glass artwork and sympathetic restoration to the features. The retail stand will be repositioned to significantly improve the flow of the building. The Picturedrome have also uncovered some origional historic artwork detailing in the screen 3 on the first level, with a complete refurbishment and two new sets of toilets added.

The Town Council continues to offer Adam Cunard and The Picturedrome its full support.

Please continue to support our Foreign Film evenings and you will soon be able to fully appreciate the significant improvements enhancing your experience.

We need to maintain an audience of over 33 for the Foreign film evenings to break even and if they are to continue. Thanks to Mac Keight for all his hard work in liaising with the Picturdrome to arrange a varied and interesting foreign film season.

BRTA Boules Final Winners Announced

Our annual Boule Competition Final was held in Hotham Park last Sunday 14 ^th August. Congratulations go to The Amiaboules consisting of Mike Turner, Lesley Smith and super sub David Roche. The deserving champions were presented with the coveted cut-glass trophy by Mrs Heather Perrott, honorary vice president of the Bognor Regis Twinning Association.

The boules tournament, brought together teams to compete over several months, thereby accruing points towards a final score

Water Jets at Place Saint Maur completed and tested

The water jets in Place Saint Maur, named after our twin town of Saint- Maur-des-Fosses have now been tested following their installation last month.

The water jets are intended to serve as an attractive gateway between the town centre and the seafront, as well as an appealing public venue for several of town events, such as the TASTE! food festival, which is set to take place later this month.

Excursions to The Black Forest Germany, Basle Switzerland and Mulhouse, France

Days out in France, Switzerland and the Black Forest were all part of an amazing programme of outings laid on recently for members of the Bognor Regis Twinning Association by Bognor’s twin town, Weil am Rhein in southern Germany. With stunning weather throughout the 6 day visit, the first outing was to Mulhouse in France where the best car museum in Europe is situated. The museum houses the huge private car collection of the Schlumpf brothers, billionaires whose business eventually went bankrupt in the 1976 oil crisis. The collection was discovered and later opened to the public. A railway museum was also an alternative option to visit before exploring the town itself.

In Switzerland, a visit to Basle included a city tour along with a guided tour of the historic City Hall before time to enjoy the city more. The following day Bognor members were taken to the Black Forest for a very packed day, starting with a visit up Mount Hochblauen, where they were surprised with refreshments of wine and cake while enjoying views of the Jura mountains and the Alps! Then onto Badenweiler Castle and the nearby impressive remains of the Roman Baths and spa. The afternoon was spent at the Horticultural Garden Show in Neuenberg am Rhein.

In honour of all the Twinning visitors, a Civic Reception with buffet was given at the Weil am Rhein Town Hall one evening with speeches by the Town Mayors of Weil am Rhein and of Trebbin, and with Mrs Heather Perrott speaking on behalf of the Mayor of Bognor Regis. Bonds Big Band, made up of students from the local music school, provided musical entertainment. On the very last evening the local scout group prepared truly excellent food for a dinner for all Twinning members and their hosts. Bognor members stayed either with hosts they already knew or those, taking part for the first time, were welcomed by new friends. Such an enjoyable and action-packed visit was over too soon. Fortunately, despite problems with air traffic and airports, the journey home went without a hitch.

Review of Spring 2022

Special visitors came to a recent Summer Coffee Morning held by the Bognor Regis Twinning Association. Bognor Regis Town Mayor was able to meet the ‘Queen’ in a lovely garden setting. As the real Queen Elizabeth was otherwise engaged having tea and marmalade sandwiches with Paddington Bear and, no doubt, many others during her Jubilee, Twinning member Angela Walsh stepped in and gave us all a treat with her regal presence … behind the mask.

Bognor Regis Mayor, Councillor John Barrett, appeared delighted to meet with the ‘Queen’ along with Mrs Heather Perrott, Honorary Vice President of the Twinning Association, for a framed portrait, although the frame was deflating slightly in the sunshine!

The very well supported, Summer Coffee morning, one of the many enjoyable events held by the Twinning Association during the year, took place in a flower filled garden in Aldwick. Members and their guests were offered tea, cakes and biscuits at garden tables but could also wander round the cake stall, plant stall or take part in a Treasure Island hunt! Games of boules and a raffle full of prizes, were also on offer.

A Day of Panoramic Views

Whilst in Wel Am Rhein we were treated to an excursion to Hochblauen in the Black Mountains(1165mplus 17m observation tower) with 360 degree views panoramic views over the three countries of Switzerland, France and Germany. At the top we were treated to a glass or two of local wine and cake.

We then drove to Badenweiler with a walk through the castle grounds and the best preserved roman baths north of the Alps. A few of us climbed the castle keep for yet more spectacular views.

We then continued to the State Horticultural Show in Neuenburg on Rhein, where we also had lunch. We spent the afternoon exploring the gardens which covered some 23 hectares.

The Schlumph Collection: The National Motor Museum

During our visit to Weil Am Rhein and an excursion to Weil Am Rhein some of our members visited the Schlumph Collection; The National Motor Museum of France whilst others visited a Railway Museum. The Motor Museum is built around the Schlumpf Collection of classic automobiles. It has the largest displayed collection of automobiles and contains the largest and most comprehensive collection of Bugatti motor vehicles in the world.

Brothers Brothers Hand & Fritz Schlumph were S wiss citizens born in Italy, but after their mother Jeanne was widowed, she moved the family to her home town of Mulhouse.

In 1935 the Schlumpf brothers founded a c ompany which focused on producing spun woollen products. By 1940, at the time of the German invasion of France, 34-year-old Fritz was the chairman of a spinning mill. After World War II, the two brothers devoted their time to obsessively growing their business, and became Billionaires.

Over the years nearly 400 items (vehicles, chassis and engines) were acquired, and from 1964 as the woollen industry started to downturn, a wing of the former 200,000 sq ft (19,000 m ² ) Mulhouse spinning mill was chosen to quietly restore and house the collection.

A team of up to 40 carpenters, saddlers, and master mechanics was assembled to carry out the restoration work, who under a confidentiality agreement kept their work and the scale of the collection a secret - a singlemindedness often referred to as "The Schlumpf Obsession." Many, including members of Bugatti clubs around the world, knew of the collection. The scale of the enterprise surprised almost everybody.

Fritz visited Mulhouse daily, choosing the colours and type of restoration each car would receive. The workers removed the mill's interior walls and laid a red tile walkway with gravel floors for the cars to rest upon. The brothers Schlumpf remained very secretive about their car collection, only rarely showing it to a favoured few.

In light of the unrelenting global shift of textile manufacturing to Asia, by 1976 the Schlumpf brothers began selling their factories. In October they laid off employees, and a strike broke out, with 400 police holding back the workers from ransacking the Mulhouse plant. After a stand-off, on March 7, 1977, textile-union activists staged a sit-in strike at Schlumpf offices, and broke into the Mulhouse "factory" to find the astounding collection of cars. An unrestored Austin 7 was burned and the workers' union representative remarked "There are 600 more where this one came from."

The Schlumpfs fled to their native Switzerland and spent the rest of their days as permanent residents of the Drei Koenige Hotel in Basel. But with wages and tax evasion accusations outstanding, the factory was occupied the next two years by the textile-union and renamed "Workers’ Factory." To recoup some lost wages, the union opened the museum to the public, with some 800,000 people viewing the collection in two years.

As the scale of the brothers Schlumpf debt rose, various creditors, including the French government and unions, eyed the car collection toward recovering their losses. To save the collection from destruction, break-up or export the contents were classified in 1978 as a French Historic Monument by Council of State. In 1979,liquidator ordered the building closed.

In 1981 the collection, buildings and residual land were sold to the National Automobile Museum Association a state sanctioned public/private conglomerate and placed daily management of the museum in the hands of an operating company, the National Automobile Museum of Mulhouse Management Association, which opened the museum to the public in 1982.

However, lacking the enthusiasm of the Schlumpfs or the financial drive of the union, the collection gradually fell into decline.

In 1999 they contracted Culturespaces to take over and modernise the museum and its operations. Culturespaces renovated the museum, including creating large scale public spaces for other cultural events, while conserving the well-known main hall with its Pont Alexandra 111 Lampposts widening the relevance of the museum to a younger audience by being given control of the French national automobile collection, the museum reopened in March 2000 as the largest automobile museum in the world.

A Day in Basel

A City of Fountains

Members visited the City of Basel a short tram ride from Weil Am Rhein. It was a public holiday in Germany and Art Basel, the Worlds largest Art Fair was taking Place. As a result the city was very busy but temperatures approaching 38 degrees probably meant the city was less busy than expected.

Our tour started at Tinguely fountain (pictured). Every square in Basle has a drinking water fountain (safe to drink) and with the exception of the Tinguely Fountain you are allowed to bath in the fountains

After lunch we has a tour of the Rathaus Basel (Town Hall) built1356 and its historic wall paintings. The Rathaus is the seat of the Basle Government and Parliament. It is particularly striking due to its Red Façade and the rich Façade paintings.
